Arizona Instructs Notebook, Part 1

By
October 30, 2010

Time to open the notebook and have a look at the Arizona Instructional League. These are players I saw that I liked for various reasons. Sometimes they are playing out of position from what they are typically listed as. We’ll go team by team. These aren’t going to be exhaustive because I didn’t see every single guy. These will be the guys who stood out or guys we have previously seen on this site. You also have to consider that guys are gassed at this time of the year. Many of these players have just finished their first full-length pro season. What you want is the pure tools, even if the guy is beat. In this environment, the tools won’t usually hide. To the backfields we go:

Scouting Update: Taijuan Walker, RHP, Yucaipa (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By

Taijuan Walker certainly helped his draft value in his playoff outing Friday.

The first thing I noticed was that Walker looked a touch stronger and more filled out than when I saw him in February. This was the best outing I have seen from him since his last look in the Fall. In this stint, Walker was poised and confident. He hit 95 a few times in the first inning and threw several 94 mph fastballs with hard life low in the strike zone. He’s a legit 6-foot-6. Walker is a big arm without question, showing plane and power.

Taijuan Walker has maintained his stuff and draft value with a sound spring. He won’t go in front of Tago, but he’s going to be the next best thing in terms of body type, power and projection.

Scouting Report: Taijuan Walker, RHP, Yucaipa (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By

Taijuan Walker has a great right-handed frame and untapped natural arm speed and power. As far as projection pitchers go, Walker is an imagination’s delight. His frame is the first selling point. Long, loose, lean and fast, there’s clearly an abundance of physical projection. Translation: he touches 93 today, look for him to pitch at 94 tomorrow.

Beyond that, Walker is in the infancy stages of developing himself as a pitcher, but all the building blocks are there for him. These parts include the beginnings of a power curveball. There’s also one other aspect about Walker. You have to see it in a game, but the guy shows the ability to figure out how to make a pitch when he needs to. You wouldn’t put a grade on it and the gun won’t tell you. Nobody will text it to you. Better be watching.

Q&A with Taijuan Walker, RHP, Yucaipa (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By
March 22, 2010

At this time a year ago, Taijuan Walker was an unknown commodity, not just to baseball, but to himself. A tall, long, lean and agile athlete who saw his future on a basketball court, Walker found himself on the mound one day. Baseball, it seems, found him.

Scouting Video: Taijuan Walker, RHP, Yucaipa HS (2010 Draft)

Right-hander Taijuan Walker helped himself this fall, putting himself and his stuff in the right light for the radar guns and those imaginative enough to see the projection in that body.

Walker’s outing Wednesday at Angels Elite was one of his best of the fall. His fastball sat at 91-92 with hard, late life low in the strike zone. He delivers the ball from a whippy frame and generates productive torque with his across-the-body motion. Walker mixed in a curveball at 82, with signs of shape and depth, and was more consistent with it than when I first saw him in September. His change-up at 80 also has promise, though it isn’t ready to take into a pro game just yet. Have a look.
