Scouting Video: Stefan Sabol, C, Aliso Niguel (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By
May 25, 2010

Here’s one more look at Stefan Sabol before the draft. This is a short clip, but this is a good thumbnail description of what kind of player this is and will be in the future. Athletically, he belongs on the field. This has always been one of the things I’ve liked most about him. If he stays behind the plate in the coming years, he’ll need to continue refining his defense. I keep coming back to the Biggio compairson. I look at his combination of offensive and athletic ability, the fact that he can run enough to help, the fact that his arm is strong enough to make the off-balanced double play throw, the fact that I bet he could go to his left and plug the hole, and I imagine second base. I think there will be better defensive catchers in front of him. Now, maybe I’m wrong. If he becomes a better defender behind the plate in the coming years, I’ll say, OK, tip my hat.  But if he hits he plays, and if he plays, you maximize his athletic value. Where that will be? Call me in a few years and we’ll find out. Either way, he’s a solid high school draft. Good luck on the minor league side because I have a feeling we’ll see you there first.

Scouting Report: Stefan Sabol, C, Aliso Niguel (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By
December 9, 2009

Catcher Stefan Sabol committed to play college baseball at Oregon. I put a Craig Biggio projection  on him because I believe he’ll have the hands to consistently put the ball in play as a pro. I see enough power in the coming years to make him a threat to occassionally get one out. He’ll run very well for the position, which lends to the Biggio comparison. Defensively, he improved from summer to spring but still needs pro instruction and innings to be ready to catch at the major league level. He shows enthusiasm for the position in-game, which is a good sign. He’ll need to improve on catching low pitches in the coming years and learn to better transfer some of his athletic actions to blocking balls. His arm strength is more than enough to make him a threat, but he’ll need to work on his footwork so his throws don’t sail on him as much. Be this as it may, if he hits, they will find a place for him to play.

First look: 2010 Draft Prospects (High School catchers)

By
September 25, 2009

Catching prospects for the 2010 MLB Draft do not begin and end with Bryce Harper. As we conclude our Fall Preview of the 2010 draft here in September 2009, here’s a look at some of the catchers nationwide who will receive interest from scouts. As we said in our Fall previews of pitchers, infielders and outfielders, September previews are meant to be road maps rather than definitive lists. Some will rise, some will fall, and some names that are not listed here will come out of nowhere.

Area Codes Day 2, Game 3: Shreve, Yelich, Foriest among prospects

By
August 6, 2009

Tyler Kuresa (Oakmont HS, Roseville, Calif.) lined a hard-contact RBI single up the middle in the first inning and Stefan Sabol (Aliso Niguel HS, Calif.) followed with a well-hit RBI double down the third base line. Christian Yelich (Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, Calif.), an intriguing prospect because of his 6-4, 185 frame, drove a ball to deep center field for a RBI triple in the first inning Thursday for the Brewers Blue (Southern California) against the A’s (Southeast), starting Day 2 of the 2009 Area Code Games at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif.

Yelich won’t be a speed burner any time soon, but he has enough athletic actions to warrant a closer look, and may have grown a bit since the end of the high school season.

The damage was done against A’s starter Nate Foriest (Harpeth HS, Kingston, Tenn.), who pitched with his fastball at 85-87 and with a curveball at 75-76 in the first inning. Listed at 6-2, 190, with a lean, loose and fast arm, Foriest did well for himself by adjusting the second time through the order and turning a showcase into a simulated game environment. He showed that one inning wasn’t worth giving up on him.
