Scouting Video: Shawon Dunston, Jr., OF, Valley Christian (CA) HS (2011 Draft)

By
November 9, 2010

Shawon Dunston Jr.  is seen here from the closed side during his AC BP round, followed by a game AB, a few dry swings and a look at infield. The first thing you’d notice is that he is still growing into his body and strength, which tended to play havoc with his balance as he was driving through the ball. He looks like a guy who is still feeling his swing out from the left side and tended to try to pull more than his body is ready for. He was at his best when going with the straight away approach and letting his hands work for him, to best bring his speed into play. As you will note, he has lean and lanky athletic actions in center field. He’s got a very active lower half and tends to play on the balls of his feet, which is what you want. His arm will be about a 4 in CF which is just fine for the kind of player he profiles as.

First Look: 2011 Draft Prospects (High School Outfielders)

By
October 1, 2010

As we conclude our Fall Preview of the 2011 draft here in early October 2010, here’s a look at some of the outfielders nationwide who will receive interest from scouts. As we said in our Fall previews of pitchers, infielders and outfielders, September previews are meant to be road maps rather than definitive lists. Some will rise, some will fall, and some names that are not listed here will come out of nowhere.

Scouting Update: Shawon Dunston, Jr., OF, Valley Christian (CA) HS (2011 Draft)

By
September 22, 2010

When your Dad has the best shortstop arm of his generation, it’s probably a good idea to take the athletic ability and play center field. I have some old sources around these parts who tell me that there was a time when Shawon Dunston Jr.was younger that  he didn’t know which hand he was going to throw with. Nowadays, the photo shows that he has a pretty solid left-handed hitting platform. He should have plus range in center field.

Area Codes Game 6: Crick clicks, Henry helps himself

By
August 7, 2010

The player who helped himself the most in this look was outfielder Desmond Henry (Centennial, Los Angeles). Always a gifted athlete who had quick-muscle actions but had the look of a kid learning the ropes as a ballplayer, he hit three balls hard in this game, including two to center field that were his best two hard contacts of this game. The best ball was a double up against the base of the wall near the 400 mark. Showed eagerness and aggressiveness, he tried for third but was thrown out on a strong throw from Texas second baseman C.J. McElroy.

Bridgewater Blasts brighten BP

By
August 5, 2010

Rouric Bridgewater hit the hardest ball of the five-hour long BP session Thursday in the opening of the Area Code Games. Bridgewater, and some of the players who also had good rounds, are among players to keep an eye on in this event. Call it the kickoff of the new Draft cycle, even though a draft cycle never really starts, and it surely never ends.
