Pro Scouting Update/Video: Jack Marder, Mariners

By
May 14, 2012

Seems like only yesterday I was watching Jack Marder one dusty afternoon taking a mean BP at Newbury Park on a non game day, then going kamikaze nuts on ground balls at short, ranging for balls most other guys would have given up on. Then, the Oregon years, when he sold me the time I saw him get his hands inside the good Gerrit Cole gas. He had a brutal last year in college – and he’ll tell you that – but he moved to catcher and I’ve never seen anyone move so effortlessly behind the plate. He was banged up that year – bad ankle, bad hand – and I watched everyone I knew give up on him. Pissed me off. You either sink or swim with your opinion on a guy, but don’t flip flop. Have the courage of your convictions. Marder said, OK, went to the Cape, got his money, and off he went. The Mariners have blown some picks over the years, but he’s going to make them look good in the 16th round of 2011.

Arizona Instructs Notebook, Part 1

By
October 30, 2010

Time to open the notebook and have a look at the Arizona Instructional League. These are players I saw that I liked for various reasons. Sometimes they are playing out of position from what they are typically listed as. We’ll go team by team. These aren’t going to be exhaustive because I didn’t see every single guy. These will be the guys who stood out or guys we have previously seen on this site. You also have to consider that guys are gassed at this time of the year. Many of these players have just finished their first full-length pro season. What you want is the pure tools, even if the guy is beat. In this environment, the tools won’t usually hide. To the backfields we go:

2009 Scouting Video: RHP Tyler Blandford (5th rd., Seattle)

By
September 2, 2009

“Tyler Blanford is a physical kid with a power fastball and power breaking ball potential,” Mariners scouting director Tom McNamara told Baseball Beginnings.

Here’s a look at a guy who could be in Seattle within two years.  This film was shot in Blanford’s first 2009 summer outing, which makes this a game-time bullpen session. In three innings, Blanford hit 96 in the first inning and pitched at 94. In the second inning, he pitched at 93. In his third inning, he pitched at 92. His slider worked at 83 with hard, late bite and his fastball has late action up in the zone. Blanford said he was throwing from a side arm slot in an experimental mode, so it will be interesting to track his process as a pro to see what slot he uses and what role he settles in it. One thing you can’t hide is the power. As the saying goes, the tools never lie.
