2011 Draft Pitching Prospects at MLSB Showcase

By
February 13, 2011

Only the strong survive when it comes to keeping track of the pitchers. Guess what? There are a few sleepers on this list. That’s good because there aren’t a lot of pro-ready arms here. This is a year for pitching projection, and it separates all sorts of evaluators, between those who go off performance, and those who look for the correct signs to more accurately look into the future.

It’s not fair to compare the 2011 group to the 2010 group, which had tons of draft quality high school arms who were closer to going out. It was a good year…Covey, Tago, Taijuan…I remember it well. This year, Henry Owens is the lone slam dunk first rounder. Everyone else? I got my crystal ball in fine working order.

First Look: 2011 Draft Prospects (High School Pitchers)

By
September 28, 2010

Yes, the 2010 Draft cycle was bountiful for high school pitching. A ton of guys were putting 90s and better up in the summer before the draft. That’s not the case this year, where the big arms really stand out. If you’re really a devotee of the scouting arts and not completely reliant on the radar gun to make your decisions for you, you will find some guys on this list who won’t be 86-88 in a few years. Which ones? Anyone’s guess. But use projection, look at arm speed, look at body, look for smoothness and you will find the big leaguers who come from the masses.

Area Codes Day 2, Game 4: Brodzinski Bounces Back

By
August 6, 2009

Catcher Greg Brodzinski took a fastball from A.J. Vanegas off his hand, but stayed in the game. In his second at-bat, Brodzinski showed some of the muscle he showed in BP on Wednesday when he made firm contact on a line drive base hit to left field. Brodzinski took second base and Sean Coyle, a speedy if sleight 5-9 right-handed hitting second baseman, went from first to third.

Brodzinski never got a chance to get a good swing against Vanegas (Redwood Christian HS, Alameda, Calif.), a hard-throwing right-hander who worked from 89-94 with his fastball and threw a 79-81 slider. Vanegas, who has a durable frame (6-3, 200), did a nice job staying in his mechanics and producing power and will be a draft quality talent out of high school.
