Scouting Update: Peter Tago, RHP, Dana Hills (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

By
June 2, 2010

Peter Tago’s final start of his high school career showed one last time his ability to maintain his power deep into games, pitch with his fastball but also show confidence with his breaking ball in fastball counts, and to know when to pitch for precision and when to reach back to find something extra.

Tago struck out 13 and walked two in this seven-inning complete game. He reached 95 in the first inning and 95 in the seventh inning.

He also touched 96 in the first inning and proceeded to pitch comfortably with his fastball at 93-94 into the sixth. Tago typically generates more consistent power the deeper he gets into games. I thought his best fastball inning was the sixth, when he was getting great extension and downhill plane, and his arm slot and release points were consistent and accurate.

Pitching in his final regular season home game in a must-win game for his team to quality for the playoffs, Peter Tago came out throwing the ball very well.

Peter Tago will soon be able to replace the road gray baseball pants with the hole in them. In his next-to-last start of the season, he was 92-95 in every inning with his best curveball of the season, according to many scouts, and hey, me. You can count the number of high school right-handers who can maintain their velocities deep into games. That arm power is what seperates the premier arms from the others. This guy doesn’t slip to 89-90 in the seventh inning.

Scouting Report: Peter Tago, RHP, Dana Hills (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

You know that line in the scouting report when you write games seen and innings pitched? I’d need a calculator and a road map to figure out how much I’ve seen Peter Tago. I’ve seen three high school games in 2010, plus several looks in Fall Ball, Aflac and Area Codes – probably about eight games and probably a good 30 innings. So I feel pretty comfortable in making this call.

Right-hander Peter Tago has more than held his own this spring, showing consistent velocity from start to start and offering scouts a long and loose workhorse right-hander with the ability to live in the low-to-mid 90s and to snap more than enough breaking balls to please you.

Peter Tago has been on the site more times than I have. Here’s the last video and it’s the oldest, dating back to August 2009. If this is draft day and you’re just discovering him, make sure you watch the other videos so you can see how he consistently improved his delivery. (I have just been informed that we have spring 2010 video coming soon.)

Q&A with Peter Tago, RHP, Dana Hills (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

Peter Tago pitches at 94-95 when he’s on, unlocking smooth and explosive mechanics from a loose arm that has allowed him to hit 97. His curveball projects as another weapon, 76-79, with the potential for future power. There’s a slider here, 73-74, with late sweeping action, as well as a change-up he hasn’t thrown very much this spring. Put it all together and this is a potential four-pitch major league right-handed starter with stamina, durability, command and control.

At a time of the year when some premier prospects put their personal dollar sign in front of the modestly talented souls wearing the same uniform, Dana Hills right-hander Peter Tago put team in front of the draft. Pitching on four days rest, he proved why scouting a prospect in whom you will invest a great sum of money is best done when the evaluation does not begin and end with the raw fastball.
