Ths guy is a breaking ball away from being a poor man’s Dan Haren. He’s got average major league fastball velocity with plus fastball control, which alone will give him a shot to succeed in the big leagues. He’s got an improved change-up he uses well. You can get to the big leagues and get paid to do that, so make a run for it.

Brian Humphries didn’t sign with the Red Sox out of high school and has had a normal college career at Pepperdine. A lot of people will like the loose and easy left-handed stroke while others will worry that he doesn’t give himself enough of a trigger to survive.

Scott Frazier found the velocity bump from the 90-91 range in the summer and the fall to 90-93 this spring. Paired with his 6-4 height and the makings of a frame some teams think has more power yet in store and you can understand why someone will take a flyer on him.

Cole Cook, a guy I have fond memories of seeing against D’Arby Myers in high school. Now it’s Cook’s turn to get on the bus.

I’ve said before that Scott Frazier represents the kind of pitcher you take a flyer on because you like his size, think there’s more in the arm, and then let minor league pitching coaches train him. It’s a right-handed do-it-yourself kit.

Scott Frazier is the classic right-handed build-it-yourself potential major league right-hander. In this recent look, he was coming off an outing in which he threw the ball very well. He came back on short rest and pitched with a sore groin in the rain, so this wasn’t Frazier at his best and is a look that has to be taken with a grain of salt. You do have to give the guy credit for strapping it on and trying to make it work.

The scouting sheet wasn’t nearly as close as the score sheet when Long Beach State right-hander Jake Thompson beat Pepperdine right-hander Cole Cook 2-1 in a game between two of Southern California ’s best 2010 collegiate right-handed MLB draft pitching prospects Friday night at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Scott Frazier, a right-handed pitcher from Upland, committed to Pepperdine University during the early-signing period. It would seem to be a good fit for Frazier and for Pepperdine, which hasn’t been afraid to go old school in the past and use guys with the arm/bat combo on the bump and in the box.
Two examples spring to mind, most famously Dan Haren, and more recently, A’s minor leaguer Steve Kleen.
Here’s a look at Frazier on the mound and then we’ll break him down.
