First Rounder vs. First Rounder: Matt Hobgood vs. Jake Marisnick

By
April 23, 2009

Facing each other today at Norco HS, Hobgood hit Marisnick on the forearm with a fastball on his first pitch of the game. Marisnick showed his athleticism around the bases, advancing to second base on a ball in the dirt and stealing third base. We’ll have further updates this afternoon.

Update: Second at-bat

Hobgood strikes out Marisnick. Hobgood looks looser and stronger as the game enters the middle innings.

Update: Third at-bat

Hobgood threw a first-pitch fastball at 94 mph, and on the third pitch left a 77 mph off-speed pitch over the plate for Marisnick, who chopped it through the left side for his first hit of the game. Marisnick again showed his speed and quick first step when he advanced to third base on a sacrifice fly. Hobgood has touched 96 in this game.

Final Update: Hobgood pitched another complete game, getting stronger, more fluid and found more extension later in the game. This was probably the last time these guys will face each other until pro ball.

“He’s too good of a hitter,” Hobgood said. “I tried to jam him inside during the first at-bat and a two-seamer ran too far inside. I think he has good hands, and with a good fastball properly located, you can get him out. But he can hit the gaps and he has legitimite power.”

Update: Norco RHP Matt Hobgood pitches through strained left oblique

By
April 16, 2009

Norco right-handed starting pitcher Matt Hobgood pitched a shutout Wednesday, despite feeling the effects of what he said was a sore left oblique. Pitching through pain, Hobgood completed the game. He helped himself with a home run to straightaway center field. Norco won the game, but I’m a scout, I don’t pay attention to scores. Good thing Hobgood does.

Yankees, Dodgers, Angels on top of OF prospect Trayce Thompson

By
April 14, 2009

We told you last week that outfielder Trayce Thompson was climbing the 2009 draft charts extremely quickly. Today, in a tournament game in Orange County, the Dodgers, Angels and Yankees were all in attendance. These weren’t the area guys, mind you, these were some big dogs.

The Dodgers had scouting director Logan White and special assistant Tom Lasorda in to watch Thompson. The Angels had assistant GM Ken Forsch in as well as Gary Sutherland, Special Assistant to the GM. The Yankees made themselves seen, with a party of five, including Assistant GM Mark Newman.

In case you missed it, here’s video of Thompson’s swing. He’s got straightaway and opposite field power and raw athletic ability.

Adenhart’s first Major League victory

By
April 9, 2009

I covered Nick Adenhart’s first Major League victory on May 12, 2008, against the Chicago White Sox at Angel Stadium. Scouting wise, what you would have noted at that point in time was a long, loose right-hander with a fast arm who was learning how to command and trust his stuff at the big league level. His line from that game was four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. Here is the link to that game story.

Update: Berglund Battles Through Sore Hamstring

By
April 3, 2009

Royal HS right-hander Bryan Berglund

Royal HS right-hander Bryan Berglund

Pitching at what he estimated to be about 85 percent because of a sore left hamstring, right-hander Bryan Berglund topped out at 92 mph in the first inning, in which he threw 12 of his 18 pitches at 90 mph or better. Berglund was sharper in his first three innings, throwing his slider at 87 mph and showing a change-up at 85 mph. Bergulund said his hamstring tightened up after the third inning, and he struggled to stay with his mechanics. In the fifth inning, losing his front side and struggling to finish, he left the mound trailing.

“It felt better, but after running the bases in the third inning, it started getting sore,” Berglund said. “I’m still working on things. I tend to drift and that’s when I leave the ball up.”

Berglund hit a three-run bases-loaded double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead host Royal to a 5-4 Marmonte League victory over Thousand Oaks.

We’ll have pitching video and additional content on Berglund in the coming days.

Update: Matzek Makes it Work

By
April 1, 2009

Tyler Matzek’s fastball hit 93 mph Wednesday afternoon, with his curveball working 73-76. The Capistrano Valley High left hander lacked his best overall command, giving up three runs and five hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out three. His fastball averaged 89-90 mph in host Capistrano Valley’s 6-4 victory against San Clemente.

Matt Grace vs. Bryce Ortega in UCLA-UA, PV smack down

By
March 28, 2009

On a side note, two kids that I covered in my prior incarnation as a newspaper slave faced each other for one at-bat Friday night. They would be UCLA sophomore left-hander Matt Grace and Arizona sophomore shortstop Bryce Ortega. They were both Class of 2007 high school kids from Palos Verdes, perhaps best known today as the place where USC football coach Pete Carroll lives and surfs. (more…)

Green Day (to day)

By
March 25, 2009

Update from USC today has shortstop Grant Green day-to-day with a minor ankle sprain suffered before Monday’s game. He should be in the lineup this weekend at USC when Arizona State is in town, with right-hander Mike Leake on the mound on either Friday or Saturday for the Sun Devils. It’s another potential First Rounder vs. First Rounder match-up.

In other news, stay tuned for the aforementioned Matt Hobgood Q-A.  Should be up tonight.
