Scouting Video: Teddy Stankiewicz, RHP, #75 Mets (2012 Draft)

By
June 14, 2012

If only everyone in baseball kept as much detailed scouting information on the players as I do. Teddy Stankiewicz is going to be one of these guys who will prove my point. Now here’s a Texas guy that I saw once. Being a California guy, I had one crack to make my observations. That was in August. This is June. Back then, in my personal notes and the scouting cards full of wisdom, projections, grades and opinion (good luck peeking over my shoulder in the stands, I have eyes in the back of my head), I wrote this:

“Like! Strong solid build, arm works smooth full circle, solid RH strike thrower, fastball with late life. 90-91, run.” I put some other stuff in there, but I dreamed 5/6 on the fastball and I slapped an OFP on him that day, 52. So here he is, and I hope the Mets are as good at this guessing game as I am.

Scouting Update: Matt Harvey, RHP, North Carolina (#7 overall pick, Mets)

By
June 12, 2010

The Mets selection of North Carolina right-hander Matt Harvey with the seventh pick in the 2010 draft reminds me a great deal of the club’s selection of Wichita State right-hander Mike Pelfrey in 2005.

Introducing Big League Beginnings and David Wright

By
June 25, 2009

One of the new features we have planned for Baseball Beginnings is called Big League Beginnings. Here, we’ll catch up with current major league players to discuss their memories of their earlier years as draft prospects and minor leaguers.

The big leagues are a pretty tough place, to be perfectly honest. It’s a dog-eat-dog workplace where most guys know that if they aren’t good all the time, they won’t be there. Confidence is a must and so is experience. Players are guarded, but many of them keep those early years close to them.

Speaking of players, here’s one: Mets third baseman David Wright. Click here to see him as a high school player a decade ago at the Area Code games. You can also find this new feature any time across the top menu bar.
