I saw about a week and a half of Matt Dean over the summer. When I saw him, he really struggled to make consistent contact. Maybe he’s a better hitter than this, but I have to go with what I saw. He’s a guy with a great, long, loose athletic body. Somebody will try to keep him at third base and hope they get the three-tool package of power-arm-glove. For me, he was a very incomplete guy based on my looks. Now I don’t have the same scouting reference I do on a more local guy, so I’ll do my best to be honest in what this guy looks like he might be.

Matt Dean showed what he was best at in the BP looks on this video. He was quick and compact, short to the ball, made hard contact, and got lift. Most of the at-bats I saw in late August seemed to get away from these strengths, which to me, are usually the signs of a young player pressing. Other things you can see in the video is the pro-type body, which is really good for third, and a little bit of that arm speed. It’s very easy to trash a high school player when he doesn’t hit when he’s supposed to. I just think there are too many variables with young players, and that you have to trust what the guy gave you when he felt right, and not get too freaked at this stage when he struggles to maintain it. They may be prospects, but this here game can be cruel.

Continuing our sneak peak at the 2011 MLB Draft here in September, eight months before the draft, here is the first look at infielders. We’ve divided up the prospects by first basemen, third basemen and middle infielders. As we said in our 2010 High School Pitchers Draft Prospect List, always take follow-lists with a grain of salt simply because of the nature of baseball. Some will rise, some will fall, and some will come out of nowhere, guys who should be here, that we haven’t seen or heard of yet.

The player who helped himself the most in this look was outfielder Desmond Henry (Centennial, Los Angeles). Always a gifted athlete who had quick-muscle actions but had the look of a kid learning the ropes as a ballplayer, he hit three balls hard in this game, including two to center field that were his best two hard contacts of this game. The best ball was a double up against the base of the wall near the 400 mark. Showed eagerness and aggressiveness, he tried for third but was thrown out on a strong throw from Texas second baseman C.J. McElroy.

Rouric Bridgewater hit the hardest ball of the five-hour long BP session Thursday in the opening of the Area Code Games. Bridgewater, and some of the players who also had good rounds, are among players to keep an eye on in this event. Call it the kickoff of the new Draft cycle, even though a draft cycle never really starts, and it surely never ends.
