Scouting Report: Jake Hernandez, C, Los Osos (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

Jake Hernandez grew on me as I watched him through Summer, Fall and into the Spring. For me, he has a chance to be a top-tier defensive catcher, and I think that gives him more value that anything else. I don’t see him as a middle-of-the-order type bat in the coming years, nor do I think he’ll be so limited offensively that he would be confined to a backup role. That would be my call on the guy. We’ll see what the future tells us.

The days when umpires like Augie Donatelli would jab their elbows into the backs of 6-5 catchers may be coming to an end. You can thank Branch Rickey for the game’s institutionalized preference for large catches. These days, baseball is generally drafting for average-sized catchers. There are many reasons for this, but here’s a few, and here’s an example.

Jake Hernandez lives at 1.9 to second base with above-average accuracy. He’s extremely smooth throwing, from coming out of the crouch, to setting his feet, to aiming his arm to the target, to consistent release points. Just like when you get a natural hitter and you say don’t touch the swing, don’t touch this guy’s throwing mechanics.

Q&A with Jake Hernandez, C, Los Osos (CA) HS (2010 Draft)

Jake Hernandez figured out early that his calling in the game was calling pitches. He committed himself to becoming a standout defender at a position where few players have the patience to grow and develop. He can also throw, where his address should be 1.9 street. Offensively, he’s best when he goes to right field. Baseball Beginnings caught up to Hernandez for this recent Q&A. His college commitment is to USC, and we’ll see who gets him first in 2010.

Wilson leads 2010 Draft Prospect Position Players at MLSB Showcase
