Pro Scouting Update/Video: George Springer, CF, Houston Astros

By

Another one of my “first time I saw this guy stories,” – Wareham, 2009, George Springer was a skinny, shy freshman right out of UCONN. I remember he was in the same BP group with Alex Dickerson. There were a lot of better known guys than Springer on that team, but I remember standing behind the cage and seeing his loose, wispy hands rocket some balls out to the metal football stands in left field.

Later on, I saw him quite a bit as a sophomore and junior because UCONN spent so much of their time barnstorming Southern California. So here’s Springer, a year later, in pro ball, at Lancaster. How ya’ doin George? Good to see you again. Baseball Beginnings remembers you well. But buddy, I’m telling you, you gotta fix that collapsing back leg.

Scouting Video: George Springer, CF, UConn (#11 overall, Astros, 2011)

George Springer had a pretty good college ball run. The first time I saw him, two summers ago on the Cape, he was just this little thin wiry kid who was very shy and kept to himself. He was coming off a good year, but he was still a little fish in a big pond. When I stood behind the cage and watched him hit, I liked him. The reason? Right-handed power. Loose right-handed power, the best kind. He had very snappy wrists and the ability to wait on a pitch and drive it. He didn’t have much meat on his bones and he could still put a charge in the ball. You could look in the crystal ball and really like him.

I saw him a lot for a guy whose home field is about 3,000 miles away from here. I remember the light-tower BP at Cal State Northridge. And this spring, down at USD, he played well. Really, for Springer, who went 11th overall to the Astros, it’s all about at-bats and experience now. I think he needs a full pro development cycle to get the power out. There is a danger here. I like this boy but I need to see him do some things in pro ball I didn’t see him do consistently as an amateur. (And if you guys in the Astros front office reading this think John Klima is going to tell you what that is for free, come hire me and I’ll tell you.)

Scouting Video: George Springer, CF, UConn (2011 Draft)

George Springer is not a guy who gets cheated nor leaves much to the imagination. He’s not hard to break down — narrow stance, quick-twitch guy, gear pull, sweeping uppercut. You’ll take him as a first rounder for power and speed, which trust me, is the best tool combination known to man.

George Springer is seen here in two different looks. The first is a Cape 2009 BP after his freshman summer and the second is a spring 2010 look. What you see is what you get. He’s a gunshot guy with wood, and there’s no denying that. You can also see the live body and bat speed. Springer’s swing is his own. It’s an aggressive cut with lift geared all pull. You can be sure in pro ball that people will try to beat him up-and-in, but even with his cut, I have seen him adjust in game and shorten up. I’m never the kind of guy to try to take away what a guy does best, even when what he does best is where he’ll be attacked as a pro. The bottom line is he’s a good athlete with power and speed, and those guys don’t grow on trees. You let him swing the fenses, take what you get, and you can find 8,000 slap hitters with shorter strokes anywhere else on earth.
