Scouting Video: Dylan Covey, RHP, San Diego (2013 Draft)

Dylan Covey is a guy who has faced an awful lot of adversity in the past three seasons. I think that this guy has faced more challenges than many college pitchers his age and I don’t think that should be overlooked when he’s evaluated again in this draft cycle. You can give me a guy with an arm, you can even give me a guy with a curveball, but some guys are workers and some guys are quitters. Some guys deal with the crap they’ve been dealt and some guys turn to crap. I’ve heard people complain that Covey is soft. My reply — did your kid become diabetic two months before his first draft?

The Covey Chronicles Continued

Before we discuss Dylan Covey’s stuff, there’s another aspect worth mentioning. It’s called mound presence. The view here is that when scouting amateurs, this doesn’t really mean anything. If a guy throws 82, I don’t care if he wears a mask, snarls and spits blood and flips off the other guy like he’s acting like the 87-year old owner of an NFL team. 82 is 82 and it won’t scare anyone. But when stuff is super premium, when it’s so obvious, you have to take into consideration some of these intangibles. Why?

Comfy Covey (More Dylan Covey Scouting Video, 2010 Draft)

Dylan Covey is motoring right along in the pre-draft season. Here in October, he’s doing the routine things a potential first round pick does: maintaining a high level of performance and projection. (That and filling out 8,000 self-addressed stamped envelopes for area scouts.)

Dylan Covey’s first outing of the 2010 draft season was something to see. Pitching for Angels Elite, you couldn’t miss Covey’s stuff, and he’s going to battle with the rest of the big name guys across the country to become the first high school right-handed pitcher drafted in 2010.
