Christian Lopes is seen here in a little look last summer in that game in San Diego. This is one of those videos where the guy pretty much shows you everything you need to know. As far as right-handed hitting infielders go, he makes throwing the bat head look easy, which is hard to find. The kid gets pretty locked in when he goes to work and I sometimes think people don’t understand this. It’s called playing baseball with a poker face. (more…)

The general overall feeling about the 2011 draft in Southern California is that this is a down year. Certainly this is not a new sentiment and it’s been known around these parts for a while. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that every player who could have played in the showcase event at the Urban Youth Academy was here Saturday, either. There are certainly players that warranted consideration and probably some who didn’t need the exposure. But I will say this – this is a draft better geared for three years from now. There are very few players who can show you a “5” tool right now, a major league average skill. That means in some bodies you will see strength. In some bodies you will see better mechanics to bring that out. The talent is less obvious this year than it was in 2010, when guys were falling from the sky. (more…)

Had a few looks at the Brewers elite team this fall. As usual, I didn’t see each guy, each week. Here’s what the notes say, alphabetically.

Christian Lopes is a guy who I think is a professional hitter before he is a professional hitter. As I have stated here before, it’s not very often you find a high school hitter who approaches his daily preperation in such a stoic manner. A lot of guys play before scouts and try to be too much. You get guys taking bad swings, gearing pull, instead of using the whole field. Lopes is one of these guys that the more I watch him, the more I like him. In that way, he reminds me of Austin Wilson, who knew he could play but never went out there with a look-at-me attitude. You put that attitude with that talent and you get an everyday big leaguer. You watch Lopes, who got better from 2009 to 2010, and you see a guy with the same traits.

Continuing our sneak peak at the 2011 MLB Draft here in September, eight months before the draft, here is the first look at infielders. We’ve divided up the prospects by first basemen, third basemen and middle infielders. As we said in our 2010 High School Pitchers Draft Prospect List, always take follow-lists with a grain of salt simply because of the nature of baseball. Some will rise, some will fall, and some will come out of nowhere, guys who should be here, that we haven’t seen or heard of yet.

In a year where bats are hard to come by, you’d be hard pressed to find a better pure high school bat than Christian Lopes.

SAN DIEGO – With apologies to anyone else in this baseball game, right-hander Archie Bradley is an absolute horse.

SAN DIEGO — Here’s a look at what you got in a five-inning look Friday and a shortened BP followed by a first-round home run contest Saturday. I have to admit, it wasn’t exactly the full speed infield, use the whole field BP, or every pitcher gets a look type of look I was hoping for. But as happens in games, you have to take what the players give you. The pre-game Sunday infield was much more crisp.

Sometime in this game, left-handed hitting outfielder Billy Flamion smoked a ball high and deep down the left field line. The ball got out of here in a split second. The ball was ruled foul.

The only run of this game came from Phillip Evans, who hit a hard single in the first inning. That moment reflects Evans at his best, when he’s spraying the ball with an eye on solid consistent contact, and not getting away from what he does best.
