Austin Wilson is a guy I have seen quite a bit of over the past few seasons. Here’s a look at some Spring 2012 and Summer 2012 video and my thoughts after. I should preface this by saying that I wrote this before he got hurt this season — so we’ll see what impact that medical has on his draft year.

Austin Wilson has been on this site so much we should call it Austin Wilson Beginnings. Hey, I can’t help it. Put a guy like this in my backyard and I’ll do what I have to do every time. There are two swings in this video and they can tell us two different things about this player. Wilson’s first swing is a foul ball, but he just missed. In that swing, you can see the power in his arms and the loose explosiveness in his body. You can see how his body has yet to physically mature, yet is basically one long piece of lean muscle. You can get a feel for Wilson trying not to get himself out, but taking pitches, and trying to let pitches come to him.

In the second swing, Wilson gets jammed. He can expect to see a lot of inside fastballs as a pro. It’s inevitable. Learning how to make this adjustment isn’t something normally done as an amateur, but Wilson has strength going for him. I assure you many kids his age wouldn’t be strong enough to get some of the barrel on a hard inside pitch, with wood no less. Have a look.
