Scouting Video: Austin Hedges, C, JSerra (CA) HS (2011 Draft)

By
April 20, 2011

UCLA could use this bat. The problem is so could 30 big league teams. Austin Hedges is seen here doing his thing. Again, when a guy does it right, there’s really not much you need to break down.

Scouting Report: Austin Hedges, C, JSerra HS (2011 Draft)

By
December 6, 2010

Austin Hedges is a guy I have seen quite a bit of in the past few years, all the way back to Angel Elite in 2009, a high school game in 2010, then Area Codes and Aflac later in the summer, and a few at-bats in September scout ball. His college commitment is to UCLA, where he might catch right-hander Lucas Giolito in 2013 if both guys get to Jackie Robinson. (Savage is reading this, praying the prayer of the college baseball coach).

On my reports, I can usually tell you how many games and innings I have seen a guy. In the case of Hedges, I’ve seen him more than I’ve seen of myself. The report will note that accordingly.

Scouting Video: Austin Hedges, C, JSerra HS (2011 Draft)

Austin Hedges is one of these guys we’ll track leading into the 2011 draft.  I also think Hedges can stay behind the plate and handle both sides of the game. I want guys who make it look easy, not guys who make it look max effort. This guy’s swing should look like this when he’s 25 and 30. The rest of him will be and feel 25 and 30. The swing stays 17 forever. It’s like that for the better hitters. That said, you can never say for certain that a guy will hit. The best you can say is I see no reason why a guy should not hit. I only wish I was wise enough to have coined that saying.

First Look: 2011 Draft Prospects (High School Catchers)

By
September 30, 2010

Catchers are always in short supply, especially at the high school level. This year is no different. As with our pitchers and infielders list, this is a follow sheet and not a ranking service. We’ll give you the basics and let the kids be the final say on what players they become.

Scouting Update: Austin Hedges, C, JSerra (CA) HS (2011 Draft)

By
September 20, 2010

In the grand scheme of draft bats in 2011, Austin Hedges is going to be near the front of the line. I’ve seen him dating back to Fall 2009 and the progression and development is pretty much evident to anyone with a pulse. He’s going to bring three tools with him – right-handed power, the ability to make hard consistent contact, and an above-average throwing arm. He’s also very sound defensively and should continue to improve. He won’t be a burner, but he’s probably going to be able to trim a little bit off his run times and be pretty close to an average runner. Put it all together and it’s a guy that is going to have to be bought out of college.

Sometime in this game, left-handed hitting outfielder Billy Flamion smoked a ball high and deep down the left field line. The ball got out of here in a split second. The ball was ruled foul.

Bridgewater Blasts brighten BP

By
August 5, 2010

Rouric Bridgewater hit the hardest ball of the five-hour long BP session Thursday in the opening of the Area Code Games. Bridgewater, and some of the players who also had good rounds, are among players to keep an eye on in this event. Call it the kickoff of the new Draft cycle, even though a draft cycle never really starts, and it surely never ends.
