Colby Suggs is maybe the easiest comp you’ll ever do: Joe Blanton.

Ryne Stanek is a guy I had seen at Area Codes and then his freshman year when he didn’t sign out of high school. He always had velocity but his arm action has always scared me. I think he asks a lot of his elbow and for me he’s an injury risk. But if you get him healthy on a good day, he can be nasty. It’s more a question of in what role will he be nasty enough, long enough, to become a regular major league contributor.

Seems like just yesterday that Nolan Sanburn was playing right field one summer in SoCal. Well, that didn’t last very long. I saw him pitching the next spring and it was obvious that this guy had power bullpen arm written on him. That would be his profile and we’ll see where the future takes him next.

Continuing a chat with our regional scouting source, I asked him to break down three of the SEC’s draft prospects based on recent spring looks. Again, these are not my comments. As I have said before, if they were, I would tell you so.

Any time you get a high school team with two obvious prospects, all you have to do is sit quietly and let scouts think you’re not listening to their speculation about who is going to be the better pro. When it comes to such matters, it’s best to ignore opinions and look at what the player gives you. In other words, the tools don’t lie. You have to know what to do with them, but at this stage, give me the raw ability. Here’s the other half of Fullerton’s draft duo, Dominic Ficociello.

You get the right kid and the wiffle ball and the string is the best investment you’ll ever make. For Dominic Ficociello, switch-hitting was an accidental discovery he made before he knew what he was doing. Now, as he approaches the draft, he’s one of the more intriguing prospects because of his combination of switch-hitting, body type, big arm, and projection. Baseball Beginnings caught up with Ficociello for this Q&A.

A physically projectable lean and lanky switch hitter with a big arm, I had a fresh look at Dominic Ficociello in a recent double-header.
