We’re going to begin this look in the seventh inning, where Gerrit Cole showed more signs of becoming a complete starting pitcher than I have seen in the previous two years. I’m still not completely sold that his best fit in the coming years won’t be as a shutdown closer, but in this look, he showed more signs of pitching maturity than he had in many previous looks. He was also the most efficient strike thrower I have ever seen him be.
The situation is a 1-0 lead with runners at the corners. His velocity and stuff are not slipping but his control is. In his first two college seasons, Cole would have reared back and tried to overmatch each hitter. Instead, he did a better job of maintaining his composure and looked like a pitcher instead of a thrower for the first time I’ve seen.

Modesto outfielder Billy Flamion is a guy I hadn’t seen until Area Codes. He showed well for himself both at Area Codes and at Aflac and I think gave himself a running shot to be drafted in a good spot in a year where bats seem to be lacking.

When your Dad has the best shortstop arm of his generation, it’s probably a good idea to take the athletic ability and play center field. I have some old sources around these parts who tell me that there was a time when Shawon Dunston Jr.was younger that he didn’t know which hand he was going to throw with. Nowadays, the photo shows that he has a pretty solid left-handed hitting platform. He should have plus range in center field.

Blake Swihart got a little lost behind Austin Hedges, but he’s not a bad guy in his own right. I had a long look at him over the Summer and I think there are some building blocks here. Switch-hitting catchers with good arms and potential to drive the ball are hard to come by. Here’s a summer break down.

In the grand scheme of draft bats in 2011, Austin Hedges is going to be near the front of the line. I’ve seen him dating back to Fall 2009 and the progression and development is pretty much evident to anyone with a pulse. He’s going to bring three tools with him – right-handed power, the ability to make hard consistent contact, and an above-average throwing arm. He’s also very sound defensively and should continue to improve. He won’t be a burner, but he’s probably going to be able to trim a little bit off his run times and be pretty close to an average runner. Put it all together and it’s a guy that is going to have to be bought out of college.

Being a well-meaning West Coaster, I can only imagine that Oklahoma’s pride in its football statewide rivals that of that other state below them. It’s football season now, which means right-handed pitcher Archie Bradley is moonlighting as a quarterback, though that’s a bad word for it. I can’t help you break down quarterbacks, but I can break down right-handed pitching.

Deshorn Lake grew on me the more I thought about him. The guy has one of the longest wingspans I have seen on the trail and I think that lends itself to natural fastball movement. Put that with a growing body, a great frame for a right-handed pitcher, and as we say, you’ve got something.

I had my first look at catching prospect Cameron Gallagher this summer, both at Area Codes and Aflac.

You would look at Phillip Evans and he wouldn’t be the flashiest tools guy around, but this guy can flat out pick it at second base, cover a lot of ground, put the ball in play, and has a very solid throwing arm at second.
