The Washington Nationals had the first pick in the 2010 Draft, but you’d hardly know it. It’s not like they made a big deal about it or went after a guy everybody had heard of. I loved this draft. What we got here was a very good balance between high school and college position players, a balance between different tools. They used only one of those premium picks on a pitcher and they got one of the good ones.

I haven’t seen each and every guy the Rangers took good in this draft, but I thought the two players they got that I am familiar with are good gets. I think this is a solid draft, probably not a franchise-changing draft, but that’s not a dig on Texas. They went with a lot of high school guys here, took a chance on a big name in the back rounds, and got what I thought was the best college third baseman on the board.

Getting down to the end of the 2010 Draft review lists. Mariners, you got next. Say hello to Taijuan Walker over there to the right. You will learn to like him as much as I did. And make sure you visit the photo store because you’ll need something for him to sign come spring training time.

Usually I can detect patterns within organizational drafts, between drafting for immediate needs or long-term growth. When I cannot see a pattern, I worry. This, unfortunately, is one of those drafts.

The San Diego Padres drafted for their ballpark, but not all seats were sold, so to speak.

The Giants like tools and college arms that are close to the big leagues. They did a nice job of balancing their two favorite things in this draft, and in the process, they’re looking for safe bets who might not become huge stars, but really good starters and complementary players. The Giants have Buster Posey, the face of the franchise, and they didn’t mess up that pick. He’s 23, so the time is now to build around him.

The Blue Jays had nine picks in the first three rounds. That means it was a make-or-break draft for the next several years, regardless of whatever they say in public.
