Revisiting Kevin Jordan, OF, Wake Forest

By
February 9, 2011

You have likely heard the story that Wake Forest freshman outfielder Kevin Jordan received a kidney transplant from his college baseball coach. We first saw Jordan here on Baseball Beginnings at the 2009 Area Codes, where I felt he was one of the few speed-power potential guys you come across in each given year. Here’s how he looked then.

I haven’t seen Jordan play since this look and I’m looking forward to seeing him again. In Jordan’s case, when I look at this video again, I see a guy who is really learning to consistently throw his hips and generate torque with each swing. He’s got an uppercut there from the left side. He was really put together in this look, and hopefully he recovers to full strength and gets back in the saddle again. We wish him well in his recovery.

Scouting Video: Anthony Ranaudo, RHP, Boston Red Sox (LSU)

By
September 3, 2010

Anthony Ranaudo is a guy we ventured over the river and through the woods to get a look at. I’m on the record for my thoughts on this guy and I think the video will show why I feel the way I do. What we have here is not a fast-twitcher, in other words, we got average arm speed here that is about to be fast-tracked with a medical history already in his back pocket. Maybe the Red Sox see something I don’t, and if they’re right and I’m wrong, no worries at all, I can live with it. But I can’t see this guy profiling as anything more than a major league grunt who has enough to be there but not enough to stand out. We’ll see what happens.

Scouting Video: Joey Terdoslavich, Atlanta Braves (Long Beach State, 2010 Draft)

By
July 30, 2010

As I mentioned in my Braves draft recap, they popped third baseman Joey Terdoslavich from Long Beach State. Here’s a look from earlier in the season.

Scouting Video: Seth Rosin, RHP, San Francisco Giants (2010 Draft, Minnesota)

By
July 27, 2010

The next time we see Seth Rosin on this site, chances are it will be video of him pitching for the San Jose Giants in the California League. In the meantime, this is video of what got him there in the first place.

Scouting Video: Leon Landry, Los Angeles Dodgers (2010 Draft, LSU)

By
July 20, 2010

Great story I love to tell about Leon Landry.

The first time I saw Landry, I didn’t see him. I heard him. I know a gunshot when I hear it. It was at Harwich in Summer 2009. Landry was fresh out of a car with his family. He was in the side cage out at that little field. And I heard the gunshot.

Scouting Video: Drew Maggi, SS, ASU (15th round, Pittsburgh Pirates)

By
June 26, 2010

I probably liked ASU shortstop Drew Maggi a little bit better than the 15th round, where the Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the 2010 draft. I’ve had two looks at Maggi, one last summer with wood and one this spring with metal. I’m not saying I had him in the first round, but I certainly saw a guy who had enough tools to make a run at the big leagues in the coming years, and not just an organizational filler, so long as he made some adjustments and gained some strength. Here’s a look, and then we’ll break him down a bit.

Scouting Video: Sean Hoelscher, RHP (27th round, Washington Nationals)

By
June 19, 2010

I ran into then-TCU right-hander Sean Hoelscher pitching on the Cape in 2009 and put my camera on him. You couldn’t miss the 6-3 right-hander with the big arm and the high socks. In this look, Hoelscher was throwing hard, 92-94.

Scouting Video: Taylor Lindsey, SS (#37 overall, Los Angeles Angels)

By
June 14, 2010

The Angels believe shortstop Taylor Lindsey is an offensive-oriented infielder with power production potential. This is a brief two-swing look at him from the summer.

Scouting Video: Tyler Shreve, RHP (10th round, Toronto Blue Jays)

By
June 12, 2010

I see Tyler Shreve as a closer. This video shows you why. Taken in Summer 2009, you can see Shreve’s burly body type. He threw hard, low 90s, but lacked balance and coordination. He had a hard time staying closed, but you couldn’t take away the arm speed. I haven’t seen him pitch since summer, but he would profile for me as a bullpen arm. It would fit his mound persona and stuff.

Scouting Video: Brian Guinn, SS-2B, Cal (Padres, 11th round, 2010 Draft)

By
June 11, 2010

The San Diego Padres loaded up on infield depth in the 2010 draft, and I think they got one of the slickest second base defenders in Cal’s Brian Guinn in the 11th round.
