Scouting Report, Jose Fernandez, RHP, Alonso (FL) HS (2011 Draft)

My pal Adrian Burgos Jr.’s guy, Alex Pompez, would probably love Jose Fernandez. This is a big guy of Cuban descent who doesn’t do much more than flash a big arm on the bump and can light up a radar gun. When I saw Fernandez, he was 94, which in this draft puts him near the front of the line. He can probably be a 94-97 guy as a pro. If you can give this guy a hard slider, you can turn him into a closer, close your eyes tight, and hope he throws strikes.
Jose Fernandez, RHP
Alonso HS, Fla.
6-4, 220
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Broad features, sloped shoulders, barrel chest, mature features all around.
ABILITIES: Big strong right-handed thrower, FB 90-94, probably capable of 94-96, might be more of a Francisco Cordero bad body, power arm Latin closer type.
WEAKNESSES: Not cut out to be a starter, lacks looseness and stamina, too much of a max effort huffer and puffer for that role.
SUMMARY: Big South Florida power arm stuff and presence profile best for ML closer role. Cordero or Valverde type.
OFP Range: 54-56
