Scouting Update: Deshorn Lake, RHP, Menchville (VA) HS (2011 Draft)

Deshorn Lake grew on me the more I thought about him. The guy has one of the longest wingspans I have seen on the trail and I think that lends itself to natural fastball movement. Put that with a growing body, a great frame for a right-handed pitcher, and as we say, you’ve got something.
In this look, Lake’s fastball was 89-92, and what I liked most was the late run. I think he still has a few more mechanical adjustments to smooth out in the coming months, and I would be cautious not to take away the arm slot that gives him the most natural action. He’s got the makings of a curveball, slider and change-up here, and over the coming months, I expect you’ll see him start to sort out which weapons work best. There is a lot to like here and a lot to track in the coming months.
