Scouting video/update: Ryan Carpenter, LHP, Gonzaga (2011 Draft)

By
July 8, 2010

Gonzaga left-hander Ryan Carpenter has all the qualities of a durable left-handed starting pitcher built for the long haul. He took a step backwards during the 2010 college season, but in this video look from his first Cape Cod League start in 2010, he showed he’s trying to get himself back on the proper track.

In this look, Carpenter was 88-94, averaging 91-92, with late life. His slider worked at 79-81 with tilt, depth and bite when he was working best. Carpenter also has a change-up, 79, in this look, as a show-me pitch here. Carpenter is at his best when he is aggressive and up-tempo. Carpenter has the combination of a durable yet loose and rangy build. He can be all arms and legs at some points and needs to be able to compact his delivery points to maintain repeatability. Carpenter has a good arm and plenty of upside, and this look showed a little of what he’s got and what he’s working on. He has a chance to pitch himself into a very good draft round in 2010.
