Kole Calhoun is one of those guys who will just pick up the bat and hit wherever he goes. As described in our earlier scouting update, Calhoun won’t light you up with tools. He’s going to be an American League type of player and he’ll have to rake to make his mark. I wouldn’t expect his pro path to be any different than his amateur path. He probably won’t be a star, but he’ll probably find a way to hit his way into steady work. Which level will that work come out? Depends how much he hits.
Kole Calhoun, OF
Bats: L, Throws: L
Games Seen: 1, Innings 9
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Stocky, thick and strong hips and thighs, low center of gravity.
STRENGTHS: Above-average left-handed hands with raw power. Good disciplined, capable of adjusting and speeding up bat head to catch good, high velocity.
WEAKNESSES: Lacks average secondary tool. Needs to show he can go to left field more than I saw in a very limited look. Limited OF range, limited arm strength, limited speed.
SUMMARY: Envision this player as left-handed bench help or DH-type. Hard to underestimate offensive potential. Won’t be a looker as far as body type or skill set goes, but has the hands and the hard-nosed intellect to be able to maximize it. Won’t be a premium guy, but I have a really hard time saying this guy won’t hit. Baseball loves the hard-nosed non-athletic grinder who can hit more than it will ever admit. Good luck on pro side. Hope he surprises people.
Overall Future Potential: 44
