Jedd Gyorko has hit everywhere he has played in amateur baseball and there is no doubt that he’s played his way into the draft. Let me say this: I don’t dislike Gyorko. I just don’t like him as a first round talent. The reason is because Gyorko lacks one dominant tool that would give him the potential to be a cornerstone type of offensive third baseman, which is what I would draft for at third base in the first round.
After seeing Gyorko play for Brewster on the Cape, I liked him for what I think he does best, which is to put the ball in play and to have the ability to play second, short or third. He lacks power and he doesn’t run well. His body type scares me and I think he’s too armsy for the kind of hitter he needs to be in order to be as successful as he can be.
If Gyorko goes in the first round in June 2010, I would surmise that it is an economical pick. Were he to fall to your club, I would say you are getting a slap hitter with the ability to play multiple positions. That kind of player has draft value and organizational value. For me, that translates into bench value at the major league level.
I have seen Kevin Youkilis comparisons because of Gyorko’s similarly closed stance, but look at the body types. Youkilis was longer and broader, even as an amateur player. That translates into durability. Could Gyorko hit enough to be an everyday third baseman? Perhaps. But unless he’s going to hit .330 every year in the major leagues, it’s going to be tough to stay there on a good team as a guy with 10-12 home run power.
I would be much more comfortable with Gyorko in rounds 3-5. But I also say this. Even though I’m saying I think Gyorko is a fringe starter and a super bench player at best, I would concede that I say this cautiously. Pete Rose was the same way in high school. All contact, no power, couldn’t run, could play a lot of positions. And we know what he did. So while I’m going against the grain here, at least you know why. And if I’m wrong, it’s not because the other publications were right. It’s because Gyorko proved me wrong.
