Interest has risen for Texas right-hander John Simms over the past few months, as his body begins to catch up to the physical projection he showed over the summer when we got a glimpse of him for this video.
Simms (College Park HS, The Woodlands, TX) is going to find his way into pro ball at some point. Over the summer, he pitched with his fastball at 88-90 and a 79-81 slider that had good bite against right-handed hitters. Simms threw it across his body and reminded me of Jeff Weaver in terms of movement, deception and physical projection. Simms also showed closed mechanics and landed squarely despite coming across his body. It was a good array of sales points shown in the summer and the progression appears to be continuing as we start the stretch run for the draft. His college commitment is to Rice.
