Scouting Report: Tyler Lyons, LHP

By
May 2, 2009

Tyler Lyons, LHP
Oklahoma State University (2009 Draft)
6-0, 207
Games seen: 1, Innings 6

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Stocky LHP with thick calves and thighs. Broad shoulders, long arms, durable and strong physique.

STRENTHS: Smooth, repeatable delivery with good downhill plane, above-average CB and above-average FB command. Best pitch is 12-6 CB, OTT (Over The Top) delivery, occasional tight spin, good command of pitch, 78-80, will throw any count, good separation between the two pitches. Average CH command, enough to work with at next level, 68-70. Average arm speed, aggressive game plans, calm mound demeanor.

WEAKESSES: Pitches with FB at 84-87, CH occasionally inconsistent. Lacks pure power, won’t be a LHP for everyone, will have to be fine to win. Will need to prove stuff maintains deception multiple times through pro lineups.

SUMMARY: Won’t wow you with pure stuff but has an advance feel for pitching. Trusts CB in all counts, pitches aggressively with fastball. Stuff reminds me of J.P. Howell, could fit in as durable middle reliever on a contender.

Tyler Lyons is a well rounded pitcher. He throws low 90′s and has a nasty breaking ball that will make you look silly, not to mention those darn lefty’s get you all the time! While playing against him in High School he was always talked about by the coaching staff and sought out to be the one to watch for. Batting against him was no walk in the park, he made you work for hits, if any hits at all. He threw a one hitter against us his Junior yr, my senior yr, and I knew he would only grow to become a better pitcher! Tyler your doing good man, keep up the good work and good luck on your career in the future!
